Blessed Andrew of Phu Yen, faithful servant of Christ, strengthen our faith and fill us with the courage to follow Jesus even in trials. Amen.
BLESSED . ANDREW OF PHU YEN
Bl. Andrew of Phu Yen was a young Vietnamese catechist and martyr who courageously died for his Christian faith, becoming a symbol of youth and missionary zeal in Vietnam.
Bl. Andrew of Phu Yen was born in 1624 in Phu Yen, Vietnam, during a time when Christianity was still taking root in Southeast Asia. He was among the earliest converts of the missionary Jesuit priest Fr. Alexandre de Rhodes, who introduced the Catholic faith to Vietnam and is credited with developing the Vietnamese alphabet.
Andrew was a devout young man with a strong sense of vocation. He joined the catechist movement, dedicating his life to spreading the Gospel alongside Fr. de Rhodes. Known for his humility, fervor, and gentle nature, he quickly became a beloved figure in his community.
In 1644, during a period of rising anti-Christian sentiment and persecution in Vietnam, Andrew was arrested for his association with the Jesuits and for publicly professing the Catholic faith. Despite the chance to renounce his beliefs and save his life, he remained steadfast. At just 19 years old, he was executed by beheading, declaring as he died: “If you kill me for my faith, then I will accept death joyfully.”
His martyrdom made a lasting impression on the Vietnamese Church. He is honored today as the "Protomartyr of Vietnam", the first of many Vietnamese who would suffer martyrdom for the faith. His heroic witness continues to inspire Catholic youth, especially in Vietnam and among diaspora communities around the world.
Blessed Andrew of Phu Yen, faithful servant of Christ, strengthen our faith and fill us with the courage to follow Jesus even in trials. Amen.
