Blessed Marie-Rose Durocher was a Canadian religious sister and educator who founded the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary, a congregation dedicated to the education of young women. She spent her life in service to the church and her community, working to promote Catholic education in Quebec.

Blessed Marie-Rose Durocher was born in Saint-Antoine-sur-Richelieu, Quebec, Canada, on October 6, 1811. From a young age, she displayed a passion for learning and education. She began her religious journey by joining the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary, a congregation she founded in 1843 with the aim of providing education and religious formation to young girls in Quebec. Under her guidance, the order grew and established schools across the region.

Throughout her life, she faced many challenges, including struggles with health, but remained steadfast in her dedication to educating girls and women, fostering their intellectual, moral, and spiritual development. Despite suffering from a series of illnesses, Marie-Rose Durocher’s faith and devotion to her mission never wavered. She died on October 6, 1849, at the age of 38, leaving behind a legacy of educational reform and service to God.

Her beatification by Pope John Paul II in 1982 recognized her significant contributions to religious education and her life of holiness. She is remembered for her selflessness, dedication to education, and deep spirituality. Blessed Marie-Rose Durocher’s feast day is celebrated on the anniversary of her death, October 6.
