St. Ælfheah of Canterbury, also known as Alphege, was an Anglo-Saxon Archbishop of Canterbury who was martyred by Viking invaders. He is remembered for his deep piety, leadership in the Church, and steadfast faith in the face of adversity.

The Vikings demanded a large ransom for his release, but Ælfheah, in a display of his unwavering faith, refused to pay the ransom, believing that his life should not be bought at such a high price.
In April 1012, Ælfheah was martyred by the Vikings in Canterbury. They killed him in a brutal manner after he refused to cooperate with their demands. His death made him a martyr and a symbol of Christian endurance and courage in the face of persecution.
