"St. Alban, pray for us to remain steadfast in our faith, and to boldly witness to the love of Christ. Help us to live with courage and devotion. Amen."
ST. ALBAN
St. Alban is considered the first Christian martyr of Britain. He is known for his courage in protecting a Christian priest, and ultimately being executed for his faith. His story is a foundational part of the Christian heritage in Britain.
St. Alban was a Roman citizen who lived in the city of Verulamium (now St Albans) in Britain during the late 3rd and early 4th centuries. At the time, Christianity was not widespread, and Christians were persecuted for their beliefs. According to tradition, Alban encountered a Christian priest who had been fleeing from Roman soldiers. Alban offered refuge to the priest, and in doing so, became acquainted with the Christian faith.
In the face of Roman persecution, Alban was inspired by the priest’s courage and faith. When soldiers came to arrest the priest, Alban, in a courageous act of compassion, dressed in the priest’s robes and allowed himself to be arrested in the priest’s place. Alban was brought before the Roman authorities, and despite being given the opportunity to renounce his new faith, he refused to deny Christ.
St. Alban was condemned to death and was executed by beheading. According to the legend, as he was being led to his execution, a spring of water miraculously sprang up at his feet, which is believed to have saved the life of his executioner who, upon seeing the miracle, was converted to Christianity.
St. Alban is venerated as the first Christian martyr of Britain. His legacy is celebrated in the town of St Albans, where he is honored with a shrine and a cathedral dedicated to his name.
