Saint Anastasius of Suppentonia, also known as Anastasius of Castel Sant’Elia, was a revered Benedictine abbot who lived during the 6th century in central Italy. Despite the scarcity of information about his early life, his legacy is preserved in the Dialogues of Pope Saint Gregory the Great, a significant source of early hagiography. Anastasius served as abbot at the monastery located in Suppentonia, a site near Mount Socrates in what is now known as Castel Sant’Elia, a small Italian town with deep spiritual and historical roots.

What makes Saint Anastasius particularly noteworthy in Christian tradition is the extraordinary and mystical account of his death. According to Saint Gregory, an angelic visitation was reported to have occurred at the monastery, in which the angel announced to Anastasius that his time on earth, as well as that of all his monks, was drawing to a close. In the days following this vision, Anastasius and each of his monastic brothers passed away one after another, all within a span of eight days. This remarkable event was seen as a sign of divine favor and the spiritual purity of the monastic community.

This collective death was interpreted by the Church and the faithful as a heavenly calling—a peaceful transition from earthly service to eternal communion with God. Such a tale underscores the profound spiritual discipline and sanctity of the Suppentonia monastic order under Anastasius’s leadership. Although he may not be as widely known as other saints, Saint Anastasius remains a local patron saint of Castel Sant’Elia.
