ST. ANDREW AVELLINO
St. Andrew Avellino (1521–1608) was an Italian priest known for his spiritual reform, piety, and deep humility. A Theatine priest, he helped implement Church reforms and is invoked against sudden death.
St. Andrew Avellino, born as Lancelotto Avellino in 1521 in Castronuovo, Sicily, was a distinguished Italian priest and theologian of the 16th century. Initially studying law in Venice and Naples, he earned a doctorate in both civil and canon law. Early in his career, he served in the ecclesiastical court but grew spiritually disturbed by the moral compromises he witnessed and engaged in, particularly dishonesty in legal arguments. This inner turmoil marked a turning point in his life. Seeking a path of holiness, he renounced his legal profession and redirected his life toward pastoral ministry, focusing on confessions and moral reformation in Naples.
At the age of 35, in 1556, Lancelotto entered the Theatine Order, founded by St. Cajetan, and took the religious name Andrew. This decision marked the beginning of a life devoted to reform, prayer, and discipline. As a Theatine, Andrew became known for his austere lifestyle, fasting, and devotion to the Eucharist. He was appointed Master of Novices and later became Superior, establishing new Theatine communities in Milan and Piacenza. His spiritual direction influenced many, including Lorenzo Scupoli, author of the classic ascetical work The Spiritual Combat.
Andrew was a close friend of St. Charles Borromeo, Archbishop of Milan, and collaborated with him in implementing the reforms of the Council of Trent. Through his preaching and writings, Andrew inspired many to deeper spiritual lives and commitment to ecclesiastical reform. His writings, particularly his letters and ascetical works, were published posthumously in the early 18th century and continue to be sources of spiritual guidance.
St. Andrew was deeply committed to daily Mass, and it was while preparing to celebrate the Eucharist that he was stricken by a stroke and collapsed at the altar. He died on November 10, 1608, at the age of 88. His holy death became a sign of his lifelong devotion, and he came to be especially venerated as a patron against sudden death.
He was beatified in 1624 by Pope Urban VIII and canonized on May 22, 1712, by Pope Clement XI. His feast day is celebrated on November 10. Today, he is remembered for his deep humility, pastoral dedication, theological insight, and unwavering adherence to reform and virtue. His relics are venerated in Naples, and he is honored as a patron of Naples and Sicily.
St. Andrew Avellino, Patron of a peaceful death, Pray for us to live with holiness and devotion. Help us to remain faithful to God’s will And to seek peace in all aspects of our lives. Amen.
