St. Andrew Corsini

St. Andrew Corsini was a 14th-century Carmelite friar and Bishop of Fiesole. Born into nobility, he renounced his wild youth for a life of penance, prayer, and service. Known as a peacemaker and reformer, he died in 1373 and was canonized in 1629.

Andrew Corsini was born on November 30, 1302, in Florence, Italy, into the prominent and noble Corsini family. As a youth, he led a rebellious and undisciplined life, engaging in behavior that deeply disappointed his devout mother. After a stern reprimand from her, he experienced a profound conversion and chose to dedicate his life to God. In 1318, he joined the Carmelite Order at the Santa Maria del Carmine in Florence, where he embraced a life of penance, humility, and prayer.

His commitment to spiritual discipline earned him a reputation for holiness and wisdom. Ordained a priest in 1328, he quickly became known throughout Florence for his impassioned preaching and tireless work among the poor and suffering. His dedication earned him the title "Apostle of Florence." Despite his desire for a quiet monastic life, he was eventually called upon to take greater responsibility within the Church.

In 1349, Pope Clement VI appointed him Bishop of Fiesole, a role he initially resisted, even hiding to avoid the responsibility. Once he accepted, however, he carried out his duties with intense devotion. As bishop, he continued his ascetic lifestyle and was deeply involved in reconciling political factions, resolving civil unrest, and defending the rights of the poor and marginalized. His peacemaking abilities were so effective that Pope Urban V later appointed him papal legate to Bologna, where he successfully mediated between quarreling noble families and city authorities.

St. Andrew reportedly had mystical experiences and was known for miraculous healings and prophecies. Before his death, he is said to have had a vision of the Blessed Virgin Mary, who foretold his passing. He died on January 6, 1373, in Fiesole. After his death, his tomb became a site of pilgrimage, and many miracles were attributed to his intercession. When his body was later exhumed, it was found to be incorrupt, further strengthening his cult.

He was beatified in 1440 by Pope Eugene IV and canonized on April 22, 1629, by Pope Urban VIII. His feast day is celebrated on February 4 by the general Church and January 9 by the Carmelite Order. St. Andrew Corsini remains a powerful symbol of repentance, reform, and reconciliation, especially among the Carmelite community and in his native Florence.
