ST. ANGELA OF THE CROSS

ST. ANGELA OF THE CROSS

St. Angela of the Cross was a Spanish nun and founder of the Sisters of the Company of the Cross, known for her deep humility, charity to the poor, and her tireless service to the sick and marginalized in 19th and early 20th-century Spain.

St. Angela of the Cross, born María de los Ángeles Guerrero González on January 30, 1846, in Seville, Spain, was the fourth of fourteen children in a humble and deeply religious family. Her parents were José Guerrero and María González, both of whom worked as shoemakers. Though raised in poverty, Angela was taught the richness of faith and Christian charity from an early age.

From her youth, Angela displayed a deep devotion to God. At the age of 13, she began working as a seamstress to support her family, but her heart was already inclined toward religious life and service. Her frequent visits to the sick, the poor, and those in need became the foundation of her future vocation. Despite her strong spiritual calling, Angela faced challenges in her desire to become a nun due to fragile health. She tried joining the Discalced Carmelites and later the Daughters of Charity but was unable to stay due to physical limitations.

Rather than being deterred, these setbacks led Angela to a more profound understanding of her mission. Guided by her spiritual director, Fr. José Torres Padilla, and under divine inspiration, she began her own path of religious service. On August 2, 1875, Angela, along with three companions, founded the Sisters of the Company of the Cross in Seville. Their mission was to live among the poor and serve them directly, particularly the sick, the elderly, and abandoned women.

Angela took the religious name “Angela of the Cross,” signifying her desire to live a life of complete sacrifice in imitation of Christ. Her order followed a strict rule of poverty, simplicity, and charity. The sisters not only tended to the physical needs of the sick but did so in the humblest ways—often walking barefoot, refusing wages, and praying ceaselessly for the souls they served.

Throughout her life, Angela remained intensely humble. She was known to call herself “the slave of the poor,” and despite founding a flourishing religious order, she consistently declined recognition. Her sanctity attracted many followers, and under her leadership, the Company of the Cross spread to several cities across Spain.

Angela died on March 2, 1932, at the age of 86. By the time of her death, her religious congregation was well-established and widely respected. People from all walks of life revered her for her holiness and unwavering devotion to Christ crucified.

Pope John Paul II beatified her on November 5, 1982, and later canonized her on May 4, 2003, recognizing her heroic virtue, humility, and deep love for the suffering. Today, the Sisters of the Company of the Cross continue her legacy of silent service and love for the marginalized.
