ST. ANSEM OF CANTRBERRY
St. Ansem of Cantrberry was a Benedictine monk, theologian, philosopher, and Archbishop of Canterbury, widely known for his contributions to Christian doctrine and the development of scholasticism.
St. Ansem of Cantrberry, born in Aosta (now part of Italy) in 1033, was a gifted and contemplative child. At the age of 27, he entered the Benedictine monastery at Bec in Normandy, where his deep intellect and prayerful life flourished. He studied under and later succeeded the renowned Lanfranc as abbot, and eventually became Archbishop of Canterbury in 1093.
A brilliant theologian, St. Ansem is best known for formulating the ontological argument for the existence of God—stating that God is "that than which nothing greater can be conceived." His writings, including the Proslogion and Cur Deus Homo (“Why God Became Man”), have had lasting influence on Christian philosophy and theology.
Despite his academic achievements, Ansem's ecclesiastical life was marked by conflict with English monarchs over the rights and independence of the Church. He was twice exiled during his tenure as archbishop but remained unwavering in his commitment to the authority of the papacy and the Church’s spiritual freedom.
St. Ansem passed away on April 21, 1109, and was later declared a Doctor of the Church in 1720 for his immense contributions to theology and Church doctrine.
St. Ansem, Pray for us to seek truth and wisdom with a pure heart. Help us to grow in faith, love, and devotion to God. Guide us in living out our faith with courage and humility. Amen.
