Born in 1807 in Sallent, Spain, St. Anthony Maria Claret was the son of a weaver. From a young age, he felt a calling to the priesthood. He joined the seminary and was ordained a priest. His early years as a priest were marked by a zeal for evangelism, which led him to travel throughout Spain, preaching, writing, and establishing religious schools and institutions to aid the poor and marginalized.
In 1849, St. Anthony Maria Claret founded the Congregation of Missionary Sons of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (Claretians) to spread the message of Christ, with a focus on education, the promotion of the faith, and devotion to the Virgin Mary. His work extended to many parts of the world, and his mission was greatly focused on working with youth and establishing educational institutions.
In 1850, he was appointed Archbishop of Santiago de Cuba, where he continued his missionary efforts. In Cuba, he established many churches and schools, built hospitals, and cared for the needs of the community. He was deeply committed to social justice and worked to improve the lives of the poor, advocating for the abolition of slavery. His actions earned him respect and admiration throughout Cuba.
Despite his work, his time as Archbishop was marked by political unrest and opposition, leading to his exile to the Spanish mainland in 1857. Even in exile, he remained dedicated to spreading the Gospel, continuing to travel, preach, and write.
St. Anthony Maria Claret was also a prolific writer and published numerous books on spirituality, theology, and social issues, emphasizing the importance of living a life of prayer, humility, and service. He was known for his efforts to promote devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, a devotion that would later be embraced by the Church in the 20th century.
St. Anthony Maria Claret's legacy lives on today in the Claretians, who continue his mission of evangelization, education, and service to the poor. His life is a testament to the power of faith and dedication to the service of others. His canonization in 1925 was a recognition of his immense contributions to the Church and the world.
