"St. Antiochus, pray for us to live with faith, devotion, and perseverance. Help us to remain true to Christ in all circumstances. Amen."
ST. ANTIOCHUS OF SULCIS
St. Antiochus of Sulcis was an early Christian martyr venerated primarily in Sardinia. Known for his unwavering faith, he is believed to have been exiled and eventually martyred for preaching Christianity under Roman persecution.
St. Antiochus of Sulcis is a revered martyr of the early Church, especially honored in the region of Sardinia, Italy. Though specific details of his life remain limited due to the antiquity of the sources, tradition holds that Antiochus was a physician or healer, possibly of North African origin, who converted to Christianity.
Under Emperor Hadrian or possibly during later Roman persecutions, Antiochus was exiled to the island of Sulcis—modern-day Sant’Antioco in Sardinia—due to his refusal to renounce his Christian faith. Despite banishment, he continued to preach and practice his faith among the local population. His missionary efforts led to many conversions, but also drew the attention of the Roman authorities.
Eventually, Antiochus was arrested, tortured, and martyred for his belief in Christ. His witness of faith became a beacon of inspiration for early Christians in Sardinia and beyond. Over time, his cult grew, and the town of Sant’Antioco was named in his honor. A basilica was built over his tomb, and he remains a central figure in the island’s Christian heritage.
His feast day is celebrated on December 13, particularly in Sardinia, where local processions and festivities commemorate his legacy as a faithful servant of Christ.
