"Sts. Basilissa and Anastasia, pray for us to live with faith and strength in times of trial. Help us to remain steadfast in our love for Christ and our devotion to Him. Amen."
ST. BASILISSA AND ANASTASIA
Early Christian martyrs of Rome, Saints Basilissa and Anastasia were noblewomen who dedicated their lives to aiding persecuted Christians during the time of Emperor Nero and were ultimately martyred for their unwavering faith.
Saints Basilissa and Anastasia were Roman noblewomen and early Christian martyrs who lived during the 1st century AD. According to tradition, they were baptized by the apostles themselves—likely by St. Peter or one of his close followers. Deeply devoted to the Christian faith, these women were known for their courageous acts of charity, including tending to the bodies of martyrs and providing Christian burial for those executed under Nero’s brutal persecution.
Their faith and public display of Christian charity made them targets of the Roman authorities. They were arrested, tortured, and eventually put to death for refusing to renounce their belief in Jesus Christ. Despite the threat of death, they remained steadfast and accepted martyrdom with grace and courage.
Their martyrdom is traditionally believed to have occurred around 68 AD, during the reign of Emperor Nero, a period marked by intense persecution of Christians following the Great Fire of Rome.
Though little historical evidence remains beyond early Church accounts, their legacy has endured in Christian liturgical traditions, particularly in the Roman Catholic Church, which honors them among the early martyrs who bore witness to the faith through their lives and deaths.
