ST. FELICISSIMUS AND AGAPITUS

ST. FELICISSIMUS AND AGAPITUS

Sts. Felicissimus and Agapitus were deacons and companions of Pope Sixtus II who were martyred during the persecution of Christians under the Roman Emperor Valerian in 258 AD. They were known for their dedication to the Church and for dying alongside their spiritual leader.

Felicissimus and Agapitus served as deacons in the early Christian Church in Rome during a time of great danger and persecution. They were among the seven deacons who assisted Pope Sixtus II in his pastoral duties. Their commitment to the faith was unshakable, and they courageously carried out their roles despite the threat of arrest and death.

On August 6, 258, Pope Sixtus II was seized by Roman soldiers while celebrating Mass in the catacombs of San Callisto. Felicissimus and Agapitus were captured with him. According to tradition, they were executed shortly afterward, most likely by beheading. Their martyrdom is viewed as a profound act of fidelity to the Church and to Christ.

These saints were venerated early in Christian history, and their names were included in the Roman Canon (Eucharistic Prayer I), one of the most ancient parts of the Roman Catholic Mass. This reflects their significance and the enduring memory of their sacrifice among early Christians.
