St. Francis of Assisi, originally named Giovanni di Pietro di Bernardone, was born in Assisi, Italy, in 1181. Raised in a wealthy household, he was given the nickname "Francesco" by his father, a prosperous cloth merchant. In his youth, Francis lived a carefree and indulgent life, enjoying the privileges of his family's wealth and social status. However, his perspective dramatically shifted after experiencing the brutal realities of war and a subsequent period of illness and captivity. These experiences, along with a mystical vision in which Christ called him to "rebuild my Church," catalyzed his spiritual awakening.

Renouncing his wealth, Francis famously stripped off his rich garments in public and returned them to his father, embracing a life of radical poverty and simplicity. He devoted himself to serving the poor and marginalized, choosing a path that stood in stark contrast to the materialism and corruption of the time. He began preaching a message of repentance, humility, and love, quickly attracting followers who would become the first members of what would be known as the Order of Friars Minor, or Franciscans.

Francis emphasized living in accordance with the Gospel, promoting peace and joy through self-denial and compassion. He believed in the inherent dignity of all creatures and preached the unity of all creation. Many stories reflect his deep bond with nature, such as the time he preached to birds or tamed a fierce wolf threatening a village. These tales, whether literal or symbolic, showcase his belief in a harmonious world governed by love and respect.

In 1224, Francis received the stigmata—wounds mirroring those of Christ's crucifixion—which further deepened his association with Christ’s suffering. He spent his final years in physical suffering and near blindness but remained joyful and committed to his spiritual path. He died on October 3, 1226, at the age of 44. Just two years later, he was canonized by Pope Gregory IX, reflecting his immense impact on the Church and beyond.

St. Francis’s legacy continues through various Franciscan communities, both religious and secular. He is the patron saint of animals and ecology, and his feast day, October 4, is celebrated worldwide, often with the blessing of animals. His life inspired the creation of the Canticle of the Sun, one of the earliest pieces of Italian literature, celebrating God through the natural world.

His message of humility, peace, and love for all creation remains profoundly relevant today, influencing environmental movements, interfaith dialogue, and a renewed focus on simplicity and compassion in a complex world.
