Renouncing his wealth, Francis famously stripped off his rich garments in public and returned them to his father, embracing a life of radical poverty and simplicity. He devoted himself to serving the poor and marginalized, choosing a path that stood in stark contrast to the materialism and corruption of the time. He began preaching a message of repentance, humility, and love, quickly attracting followers who would become the first members of what would be known as the Order of Friars Minor, or Franciscans.

Francis emphasized living in accordance with the Gospel, promoting peace and joy through self-denial and compassion. He believed in the inherent dignity of all creatures and preached the unity of all creation. Many stories reflect his deep bond with nature, such as the time he preached to birds or tamed a fierce wolf threatening a village. He is the patron saint of animals and ecology, and his feast day, October 4, is celebrated worldwide, often with the blessing of animals. His life inspired the creation of the Canticle of the Sun, one of the earliest pieces of Italian literature, celebrating God through the natural world.

His message of humility, peace, and love for all creation remains profoundly relevant today, influencing environmental movements, interfaith dialogue, and a renewed focus on simplicity and compassion in a complex world.
