ST. ILDEPHONSUS

St. Ildephonsus of Toledo was a 7th-century archbishop, theologian, and defender of the perpetual virginity of Mary. He is revered especially in Spain for his deep Marian devotion and ecclesiastical leadership.

Saint Ildephonsus was born around 607 AD in Toledo, in the Visigothic Kingdom of Hispania (modern-day Spain). Coming from a noble and influential family, he chose the monastic path early, joining the Benedictine monastery of Agali near Toledo. His devotion, humility, and scholarship made him well-respected among clergy and laity alike.

He was appointed abbot of Agali and later became the Archbishop of Toledo in 657 AD. As Archbishop, Ildephonsus played a crucial role in strengthening the Church in Spain, upholding orthodox theology, and promoting Marian devotion. His most famous work, "On the Virginity of Mary before, during, and after the birth of Christ", defended the Church’s teaching on the Blessed Virgin Mary, earning him the title "Doctor of the Virginity of Mary."

According to legend, the Virgin Mary appeared to him in the cathedral and presented him with a liturgical vestment in gratitude for his devotion—an event that significantly boosted Marian devotion in the region.

St. Ildephonsus died on January 23, 667, and was buried in the Church of Saint Leocadia in Toledo. His influence on Spanish spirituality, particularly Marian theology, endured long after his death.
