The missionaries often had to contend with harsh climates, disease, and the challenges of learning new languages and cultural practices. Jogues was tortured by the Mohawks, who, in an effort to extract information about French settlements and to punish him for spreading Christianity, mutilated his hands and fingers. Despite the horrendous suffering, Isaac was eventually freed by the intervention of the French.

After recovering in France, Isaac Jogues returned to New France in 1646, determined to continue his missionary work. He was captured once again by the Mohawks, and this time, he and his companions met their deaths as martyrs. Isaac Jogues was killed by the Mohawks on October 18, 1646, and his companions, including Jean de Brébeuf, Noël Chabanel, Antoine Daniel, Charles Garnier, René Goupil, and Gabriel Lalemant, also endured martyrdom for their unwavering faith. Their deaths were a testament to their deep commitment to their missionary work, their love for the Indigenous peoples they sought to evangelize, and their unshakable faith in Christ.

The Jesuit martyrs' stories, including their suffering and sacrifices, were widely circulated in Europe and became an inspiration for many. Their beatification process began soon after their deaths, and they were eventually canonized by Pope Pius XI in 1930. The canonization recognized them as martyrs, who, despite their brutal deaths, had given everything for their faith and for the people they served.

St. Isaac Jogues and his companions are considered patrons of North American Jesuits, missionaries, and martyrs. Their feast day is celebrated on October 19, and they are remembered for their courageous missionary efforts, their sacrifice, and their unwavering dedication to spreading the Christian faith.
