ST. JAIN FRANCIS DE SHANTHAL

ST. JAIN FRANCIS DE SHANTHAL

St. Jane Frances de Chantal was a French noblewoman, widow, and founder of the Visitation Order. She is the patron saint of widows and those struggling with difficult family relationships.

St. Jane Frances de Chantal was born into French nobility in Dijon, Burgundy, on January 28, 1572. Her father, Bénigne Frémyot, was the president of the Parliament of Burgundy, and she was raised in a devout Catholic household. From a young age, Jane exhibited piety, strength of character, and a love for the poor. At 20, she married Baron Christophe de Rabutin-Chantal and bore him six children, though only four survived infancy.

Her life was marked by both love and tragedy. In 1601, her husband was accidentally shot and killed during a hunting expedition. Devastated, Jane chose not to remarry and instead devoted herself to her children and a deepening relationship with God. Her suffering refined her spirituality and deepened her compassion for others, especially those who were grieving or in need.

In 1604, she met St. Francis de Sales, who became her spiritual director and close friend. Their deep spiritual bond would lead to the foundation of the Order of the Visitation of Holy Mary in 1610 in Annecy, France. The Visitation Sisters were unique at the time for welcoming women who were older, sick, or otherwise unable to enter stricter religious orders. Jane founded over 80 convents across France during her lifetime.

Despite facing spiritual dryness, loneliness, the deaths of loved ones, and the turmoil of war, Jane remained faithful and joyful in her service to God. She died on December 13, 1641, in the Visitation convent in Moulins, France. Her incorrupt body lies in Annecy beside her dear friend, St. Francis de Sales.
