St. Jerome

St. Jerome is a Doctor of the Church, best known for translating the Bible into Latin (the Vulgate) and for his contributions to Biblical scholarship. His works and studies remain influential to this day.

St. Jerome was a 4th and early 5th-century Christian scholar, priest, and theologian, and is best known for his translation of the Bible into Latin, known as the Vulgate. Born around 347 AD in Stridon, a town on the border of Dalmatia and Pannonia (modern-day Croatia), Jerome came from a wealthy Christian family. He received an excellent education and showed an early interest in learning languages, including Greek and Hebrew, which would later play a key role in his Biblical translations.

Jerome’s significant contribution to Christianity was his translation of the Old and New Testaments from Hebrew and Greek into Latin, a task that he began around 382 AD and completed in 405 AD. His work on the Vulgate became the standard version of the Bible in the Western Christian world for many centuries and remains one of the most important texts of the Church.

Aside from his work on the Bible, Jerome was also an avid scholar, theologian, and ascetic. He lived much of his life in the desert in Syria, where he pursued a life of prayer, study, and writing. He had a sharp intellect and was known for his fiery temperament, which often led to clashes with other Church leaders and fellow scholars. Despite this, his contributions to Christian theology, Biblical studies, and monasticism were immense.

Jerome’s writings included theological commentaries, letters, and treatises, many of which are still valuable today for their insights into early Christianity. His work was particularly influential in the development of Christian monasticism and his ascetic lifestyle set a model for future monks.

St. Jerome died in Bethlehem on September 30, 420 AD, and was buried in a cave near the Church of the Nativity. He was canonized by popular acclaim, and his feast day is celebrated on September 30.
