Eventually, he was made the abbot of the Monastery of St. Catherine on Mount Sinai, where he would lead a group of monks toward a deeper spiritual life.

He is most famous for his spiritual work, The Ladder of Divine Ascent, which he wrote in the form of a spiritual guide. The book became one of the most influential texts in Eastern Orthodox monasticism. In it, St. John describes the 30 steps, or "rungs," that a soul must climb in order to ascend toward God. Each step represents a different virtue to be cultivated while renouncing sin, with the ultimate goal of achieving union with God.

These 30 steps cover a wide array of virtues, from renunciation of worldly desires to humility, patience, and purity of heart. His teaching stressed the importance of prayer, watchfulness, and discernment, as well as living a simple, humble life in obedience to God. St. John's influence stretched beyond his lifetime, with his writings remaining central in Christian monasticism. His life serves as an enduring example of the importance of silence, humility, and an unwavering commitment to the monastic path.

St. John’s death is traditionally believed to have occurred on May 13, 605, and his feast day is celebrated on the same date. Though not formally canonized by the Church, his recognition as a saint comes through his lasting influence on Christian spirituality. He was buried on Mount Sinai, near the Monastery of St. Catherine, where his legacy continues to inspire Christians and monastics worldwide. His works have had a profound impact not only in Eastern Orthodox Christianity but also among those in other Christian traditions who seek spiritual depth through monastic and contemplative life.
