Saint Joseph Cottolengo was an Italian priest and founder of the "Little House of Divine Providence," an institution dedicated to helping the poor, sick, and people with disabilities. Saint Joseph Benedict Cottolengo was born on May 3, 1801, in the small town of Bra near Turin, Italy. From an early age, he felt a strong calling to serve the poor, sick, and marginalized in society, particularly those who were often neglected or abandoned by others. After studying for the priesthood, he was ordained a priest in 1824 and quickly realized the profound needs of the poor in his community.

Driven by his compassion, Cottolengo founded the "Little House of Divine Providence" (Piccola Casa della Divina Provvidenza) in 1828. The institution was created as a home for the poor, orphans, the sick, and especially people with physical and mental disabilities. At a time when society largely ignored the disabled, Cottolengo’s vision was revolutionary. He opened a series of hospitals, homes, and institutions that offered care, love, and a sense of dignity to those who were typically ostracized.

His dedication to the poor extended to caring for the elderly, the homeless, and the suffering, often reaching out to those no one else would help. His approach was rooted in the belief that divine providence would provide for those who served others with love and selflessness. Over time, the institution grew, and his work became widely recognized. Cottolengo's profound sense of faith and trust in God’s providence inspired many, and he worked tirelessly to ensure that the people under his care received not only food and shelter but also spiritual guidance.

He passed away on March 30, 1842, at the age of 40, leaving behind a legacy of love and service that would continue to flourish. After his death, his institutions continued to care for the poor and sick, and his influence spread far beyond Turin. In 1934, he was beatified by Pope Pius XI, and later, he was canonized a saint by Pope John XXIII on March 17, 1963. His feast day is celebrated on May 30th.

Saint Joseph Cottolengo is remembered as a true servant of God, whose life was devoted to the care of those most in need. His beatification and canonization reflected his exceptional dedication and the profound impact he had on the lives of countless people, particularly the most vulnerable members of society.
