ST. LUIES DE MOUNTFORT
St. Luies de Mountfort was a French priest and missionary, known for his intense devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary and for founding the Company of Mary and the Daughters of Wisdom.
St. Luies de Mountfort, born in Montfort-sur-Meu, France, was a passionate preacher and a fiery missionary with a heart totally given to Christ through Mary. From an early age, he displayed a deep love for the poor and a strong devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. After studying at the renowned seminary of Saint-Sulpice in Paris, he was ordained a priest and began a tireless mission of evangelization throughout France.
He became widely known for his powerful preaching and radical message of consecration to Jesus through Mary. His spirituality emphasized total surrender to Christ by means of Mary, which he explained in his famous work True Devotion to Mary, now a spiritual classic embraced by popes and faithful worldwide. Despite resistance and persecution, including from clergy and local authorities, he continued his preaching missions and founded the Company of Mary (Montfort Missionaries) and the Daughters of Wisdom, focusing on education, care of the poor, and spreading Marian devotion.
St. Luies died at the age of 43, exhausted from his labors, but his legacy endures. His Marian spirituality deeply influenced the Church, including Pope John Paul II, who adopted his motto "Totus Tuus" from Montfort's writings.
