ST. MARIUS, MARTHA, AUDIFAX, AND ABACHUM
Saints Marius, Martha, Audifax, and Abachum were a noble Persian family martyred in Rome for aiding Christian martyrs during the persecutions of Emperor Claudius II. Their courage and sacrifice became a powerful witness to the early Church.
Saints Marius, Martha, Audifax, and Abachum were a Christian family of noble Persian origin who traveled to Rome in the 3rd century to venerate the tombs of the martyrs and assist the persecuted faithful during the reign of Emperor Claudius II.
Upon arriving in Rome, the family took it upon themselves to minister to imprisoned Christians and to help with the burial of the martyred. Their courage and public Christian witness did not go unnoticed. They were soon arrested and interrogated about their faith.
The family steadfastly refused to renounce Christianity. Marius and his sons Audifax and Abachum were subjected to brutal tortures and eventually executed by beheading in Rome. Martha, their mother and wife of Marius, suffered a separate martyrdom. She was taken to a place called Nymphae Catabassi near Rome, where she was drowned after being cruelly beaten.
Their relics were later gathered and honored by the early Christian community. They were buried on the Via Cornelia, and a church was eventually erected in their honor. Their martyrdom exemplifies the deep faith, unity, and courage of Christian families during the intense persecutions of the early Church.
Today, they are venerated together as a family of saints who supported each other unto death for the sake of Christ.
