Saint Mark is traditionally depicted as a lion, representing courage and the majesty of Jesus as portrayed in his Gospel. He is the patron saint of Venice, Italy, where his relics are said to have been brought in the 9th century. The famous St. Mark’s Basilica in Venice was constructed in his honor and houses his relics. His influence spread throughout the Christian world, with his Gospel continuing to be a central text for Christians seeking to understand the life of Christ.

Although details of his death are not clear, it is believed that Mark died as a martyr in Alexandria, Egypt, around the year 68 AD.
