"Martyrs of Gorkum, pray for us to have the courage to remain faithful to Christ, even in the face of persecution. Help us to live with unwavering devotion and strength. Amen."
ST. MARTYRS OF GORKUM
The Martyrs of Gorkum were nineteen Catholic clergy and religious men who were tortured and executed by Dutch Calvinists in 1572 for refusing to renounce their faith, especially their belief in the Real Presence of the Eucharist and the authority of the Pope.
The Martyrs of Gorkum were a group of 19 faithful men—priests and religious—who gave their lives for the Catholic faith during the Dutch Revolt against Spanish rule. Captured in the town of Gorkum in the Netherlands, they were imprisoned, tortured, and ultimately hanged by militant Calvinists on July 9, 1572.
These men included secular priests, Franciscan friars, and members of various religious orders, all of whom refused to abandon key doctrines of the Catholic Church, such as the Eucharist and papal supremacy. They endured cruel treatment over several days, yet remained united in prayer and unwavering in their faith.
Among the martyrs were notable figures like Fr. Nicolas Pieck, a Franciscan guardian, and Fr. Leonard Vechel, a parish priest known for his zeal. Despite the opportunity to escape death by renouncing their beliefs, all nineteen chose martyrdom. Their sacrifice became a powerful witness to the strength of faith under persecution.
They were beatified in 1675 and canonized in 1867. Today, they are honored as heroes of the Church, especially remembered for their courage and unity in defense of the faith.
