ST. MARYUS AND FAMILY
St. Marius, his wife Martha, and their sons Audifax and Abachum were Persian Christian martyrs who traveled to Rome to assist persecuted Christians and were martyred for their faith.
Saint Marius and his family—his wife Martha and their two sons, Audifax and Abachum—were wealthy Christians from Persia during the 3rd century. Deeply devout and courageous, they left their homeland and journeyed to Rome during the persecution of Christians under the Roman Emperor Claudius II (around 268–270 AD).
In Rome, they provided comfort and burial for the bodies of Christian martyrs, risking their lives to show compassion. Their efforts were soon noticed, and they were arrested for practicing and supporting Christianity. Refusing to renounce their faith or sacrifice to pagan gods, the entire family was subjected to brutal torture.
Saint Marius and his two sons were eventually beheaded along the Via Cornelia. Saint Martha, after being cruelly tortured and drowned in a well, was also martyred. Their bodies were recovered by a Roman lady named Felicitas and were later interred in a suitable place for veneration.
This entire family stands as a testament to the strength of Christian family unity, faith under persecution, and love for the suffering. Their story has been remembered and venerated in the Church for centuries.
St. Maryus and family, help us to live with love, faith, and unity in our families. May your example of devotion to God inspire us to serve Him faithfully and support one another in our journey of faith. Amen.
