St. Methodius of Constantinople (c. 800 – 847) was an influential Byzantine theologian and bishop, best known for his pivotal role in the restoration of icons during the period known as the "Second Iconoclasm." As a staunch advocate for the veneration of icons, he worked tirelessly to reverse the iconoclastic policies that had previously led to the destruction of religious images. Methodius's efforts culminated in the restoration of icons in 843, a victory for Orthodoxy celebrated every year on the "Sunday of Orthodoxy" in the Eastern Orthodox liturgical calendar. Born around 800, Methodius's early life remains largely unknown. He became a bishop of Constantinople during a time of great theological conflict within the Byzantine Empire. The iconoclast controversies, which started in the 8th century, divided the church, with iconoclasts calling for the destruction of religious images and iconophiles (those who supported the use of icons) defending their importance as a vital part of worship and Christian tradition. Methodius, alongside other prominent bishops, stood firm against the iconoclasts. He was eventually exiled for his steadfast defense of icons. However, following the death of Emperor Theophilus in 843, the tides shifted, and the restoration of the veneration of icons was achieved under the new rule of Emperor Michael III. This victory is commemorated every year, as it was a defining moment in the history of the Eastern Orthodox Church, affirming the Church’s position on icons and defending the integrity of Christian traditions. Throughout his life, Methodius was a prolific writer and theologian, contributing works that defended the use of icons and elucidated the Orthodox Christian position on Christ’s incarnation. His writings, including theological treatises, hymns, and letters, have had a lasting impact on the Church's teachings. His legacy endures as a pillar of Orthodoxy, particularly for his role in ensuring the proper understanding and veneration of sacred images.
