St. Paul Miki and his companions were 26 martyrs who were crucified in 1597 for their Christian faith during Japan's period of persecution. St. Paul Miki was born in 1562 in Japan and became a Jesuit seminarian. He was known for his great preaching skills and deep devotion to his faith. Along with 25 other Christians, he was arrested during a period of intense persecution against Christianity by the Tokugawa shogunate. The government sought to suppress the growing Christian community, which was seen as a threat to its authority and traditional Japanese practices.

On February 5, 1597, St. Paul Miki, along with the other 25 Christians, was paraded through the streets of Nagasaki. The group included Jesuit priests, Japanese laypeople, and a Franciscan missionary. They were all condemned to die for their faith.
