Saint Roch, also known as St. Rock, was a 14th-century French pilgrim known for healing plague victims and surviving the disease himself. He is often depicted with a wound on his leg and a faithful dog who brought him bread during his illness. Widely venerated as the patron saint of plague victims, his legacy endures in art, devotion, and prayer.

Saint Roch of Montpellier was born around 1295 into a wealthy and pious noble family in the city of Montpellier, France. Orphaned at a young age, Roch inherited his family's wealth but chose a life of humility, charity, and devotion to God. Following the model of Christian pilgrims, he gave away his fortune to the poor and set out on a journey of piety and healing. His pilgrimage took him across Italy during one of the deadliest outbreaks of the bubonic plague.

During his travels, Saint Roch ministered to those afflicted by the plague in several cities, including Rome, Piacenza, and Aquapendente. According to tradition, through his prayers and by making the sign of the cross, he was able to miraculously heal many people. His reputation for healing spread quickly, and he became known as a miracle worker. Saint Roch did not seek recognition for his deeds; instead, he remained focused on serving the sick and marginalized.

Eventually, Roch himself contracted the plague. Not wanting to endanger others, he withdrew to a secluded forest outside Piacenza. There, according to legend, a spring miraculously appeared to provide him water, and a dog from a nearby estate brought him bread each day and licked his wounds, aiding in his healing. This loyal dog has since become an iconic part of his imagery and is often seen beside him in statues and paintings.

After recovering, Roch returned to Montpellier, but due to his changed appearance and lack of identification, he was mistaken for a spy or vagabond and imprisoned. He spent the last years of his life in captivity, where he died in 1327. It was only after his death that his true identity was discovered. A birthmark in the shape of a red cross on his chest revealed who he truly was.

Though Saint Roch was never formally canonized by the Roman Catholic Church, he was declared a saint by popular acclaim shortly after his death. His cult spread rapidly throughout Europe, especially during subsequent waves of the plague. His feast day is traditionally celebrated on August 16, and he became a symbol of hope, healing, and divine protection. In many European countries, shrines, churches, and confraternities were established in his honor.

Saint Roch’s influence extended into art and culture as well. Paintings by great masters and countless statues in churches depict him with his distinctive plague wound and loyal dog companion. He is also invoked in prayers during times of pestilence, illness, and suffering, particularly during plagues and pandemics, making his relevance felt even in modern times. His primary shrine is in the Church of San Rocco in Venice, which houses many relics and artworks dedicated to him.
