"O God, who didst call thy servant Symphorian to bear witness to the faith by his martyrdom, grant that we, who celebrate his memory, may follow his example of courage and fidelity. Through Christ our Lord. Amen."
ST. SYMPHORIAN
Saint Symphorian of Autun was a young Christian martyr who lived in the 2nd century in what is now France. Born to a noble Christian family—his father was Senator Faustus and his mother was Blessed Augusta—he was well-educated and baptized by St. Benignus. His story is a testament to unwavering faith and courage in the face of persecution.
Around the year 178, during the reign of Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius, Autun was a city steeped in pagan traditions. During a grand procession honoring the goddess Cybele, Symphorian refused to participate in the idolatrous worship. He boldly declared his Christian faith, even suggesting he could destroy the idol with a hammer. This act led to his arrest and flogging by the provincial governor, Heraclius. Despite offers of wealth and status to renounce his beliefs, Symphorian remained steadfast. He was condemned to death and executed by beheading on August 22, 178. His mother, witnessing his final moments, encouraged him with the words: “My son, my son, Symphorian, remember the living God, and be of good courage. Raise your heart to heaven, and consider him that reigneth there. Fear not death which leads to certain life.”
Following his martyrdom, Symphorian's tomb became a site of veneration. In the mid-5th century, Bishop Euphronius of Autun constructed a church over his grave, which became a pilgrimage destination. The saint's cult spread throughout the Frankish Empire, with notable devotion in Tours, where St. Gregory of Tours recorded a miracle attributed to him.
St. Symphorian is honored annually on August 22. He is recognized as the patron saint of Autun and is invoked for protection against eye problems and syphilis. His story continues to inspire Christians as a model of unwavering faith and courage in the face of adversity.
