St. Theodosius the Cenobiarch was born around 423 AD in Garissus, Cappadocia, in present-day Turkey. He grew up in a Christian environment and felt a deep calling to the monastic life. At a young age, he journeyed to the Holy Land, where he was inspired by the stories of biblical patriarchs like Abraham. During his time in Jerusalem, he was guided by St. Longinus, an experienced monk, who nurtured his spiritual growth. Theodosius was particularly attracted to the life of asceticism, and he soon decided to dedicate himself fully to monasticism.

At a time when monasticism in the Eastern Christian world was predominantly solitary or hermitic, Theodosius became a leader in promoting cenobitic monasticism, where monks lived and prayed together in community. This approach, which emphasized mutual support and collective spiritual life, was revolutionary and helped reshape monasticism in the region.

He founded the Monastery of St. Theodosius near Bethlehem, a significant center for Christian monasticism. This monastery became a refuge for monks from all over the Christian world, including Greeks, Armenians, and Arabs. The monks in his monastery lived a life of prayer, asceticism, and communal work. St. Theodosius emphasized discipline, humility, and charity, which helped attract many followers to his cause.
