He entered the St. Petersburg Theological Academy at the age of 19, where he was renowned for his intellect and piety.

After completing his education, Theophan worked as a professor at the Academy, but in 1841, he chose the monastic life and became a monk. He was given the name Theophan, meaning "God-bearer." His ascetic lifestyle and commitment to deep prayer and solitude became evident during this period, as he embraced a life dedicated to the monastic ideals of humility and simplicity. In 1844, he was appointed bishop of Tambov, but he continued to live with profound asceticism and prayer despite his high-ranking position in the church.

In the years that followed, Theophan found himself increasingly disillusioned by the materialism of the world and sought deeper communion with God. He withdrew from his episcopal duties and retreated to the monastic community at the St. Nicholas Monastery in Vyatka, where he embraced the life of a recluse. There, he devoted himself entirely to prayer, contemplation, and writing. His writings on spiritual matters became a guiding light for many in the Orthodox Christian community, as he offered profound insights into the nature of prayer, spiritual warfare, and ascetic discipline.

St. Theophan's legacy as a spiritual teacher is primarily defined by his letters and books. His feast day is celebrated on January 6th, commemorating his unwavering devotion to God and his extraordinary spiritual wisdom.
