William was appointed Bishop of Roskilde, a diocese that played a vital role in the religious and political life of Denmark. He was deeply admired for his sense of justice, simplicity, and pastoral care.

One of the most defining moments of his episcopacy involved a confrontation with King Sweyn II Estridsson of Denmark. The king, though a patron of the Church in many respects, was known for his occasional acts of cruelty, particularly in dealing with those who opposed his authority. On one such occasion, the king ordered the execution of a group of individuals without trial or just cause.

St. William, moved by his sense of Christian duty and justice, boldly confronted the king. He spoke against the executions and reprimanded the monarch for acting without mercy or proper justice. This act of moral courage placed him in danger, but William was willing to risk his life to uphold the Gospel values of mercy, forgiveness, and human dignity.

Remarkably, King Sweyn is said to have been deeply moved by William’s boldness and sincerity. Instead of retaliating, the king came to respect William even more. Their relationship thereafter was marked by greater cooperation and mutual respect. William’s peaceful yet firm resistance left a lasting impression, not only on the king but also on the clergy and laity who admired his bravery and faithfulness.

Beyond political matters, St. William was a shepherd to his flock in every sense. He devoted himself to the care of the poor, the education of the clergy, and the sanctity of the sacraments. He promoted the building of churches and monasteries, creating spaces where the faithful could grow in holiness. His spiritual leadership helped further establish the Catholic faith in Denmark during a pivotal time.

St. William passed away around the year 1073. His legacy of holiness, courage, and peace quickly spread, and he was venerated locally as a saint not long after his death. Many regarded him as a true peacemaker who dared to speak truth to power while remaining humble and compassionate.

In 1224, Pope Honorius III officially canonized William of Roskilde, recognizing his sanctity and allowing for his public veneration throughout the Church. His canonization was one of the earlier formal recognitions of a Scandinavian saint and was significant for the spread of Christianity in Northern Europe.

Today, his remains rest in Roskilde Cathedral, one of Denmark’s most historic churches. The cathedral became not only a center of worship but also a royal burial site, further emphasizing the enduring impact of Christianity in Denmark, thanks in part to the witness of saints like William.

St. William of Roskilde continues to be a powerful example of a bishop who stood for justice, led with humility, and worked for peace in a time of political instability. His feast is celebrated each year on September 2, and he remains a patron for peacemakers, leaders, and those who seek moral courage in their lives.
