Blessed Didace Pelletier, faithful missionary and humble servant of God, pray for us to follow Christ with courage and compassion. Amen.
BLESSED. DIDACE PELLETIER
Blessed Didace Pelletier was a Canadian Recollect Franciscan priest and missionary, known for his deep humility, tireless pastoral service, and devotion to the spiritual needs of early French settlers and Indigenous peoples in New France.
Blessed Didace Pelletier was born in Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré, Quebec, Canada, in 1657. He entered the Recollect branch of the Franciscan order at a young age, drawn by its commitment to simplicity, poverty, and missionary zeal. He was ordained a priest in 1684 and became the first Canadian-born Recollect to be ordained.
Fr. Didace devoted his life to missionary work across New France, especially in Quebec, where he ministered to both colonists and Indigenous communities. Known for his tireless energy, deep spiritual insight, and gentleness, he quickly earned the respect and love of the faithful.
He was a man of great humility and penance, often undertaking arduous journeys to reach remote parishes and mission outposts. Despite the physical toll of his travels and the challenges of ministering in harsh conditions, he maintained a life of prayer and joyful service.
Didace died young, at just 41 years old, after a life of intense ministry and sacrifice. His reputation for holiness grew after his death, and his tomb became a place of pilgrimage. Though never formally canonized, his cultus was recognized, and he is honored as "Blessed" by popular devotion.
Blessed Didace Pelletier, faithful missionary and humble servant of God, pray for us to follow Christ with courage and compassion. Amen.
BLESSED. DIDACE PELLETIER
