Blessed Henry Suso, mystic of divine love, guide us to seek deeper union with Christ through humility, suffering, and joy in God's presence. Amen.
BLESSED. HENRY SUZO
Bl. Henry Suso was a German Dominican mystic and writer, renowned for his deep spirituality, poetic mysticism, and intense devotion to Christ. His writings deeply influenced medieval Christian mysticism and theology.
Blessed Henry Suso was born into a noble family in Überlingen, in the region of Swabia (modern-day Germany), on March 21, 1295. He joined the Dominican Order at the young age of 13. Suso became one of the most prominent figures of the German Dominican mystic tradition, closely associated with other Rhineland mystics like Meister Eckhart and Johannes Tauler.
As a young monk, Suso underwent a profound conversion that led him to pursue a life of intense asceticism and spiritual devotion. He is best known for his deep mystical union with Christ and his poetic expressions of divine love. His most famous works include The Little Book of Eternal Wisdom and The Little Book of Truth, which explore the soul’s relationship with God and the path to spiritual perfection.
Suso’s teachings often centered around the soul’s passionate love for God, expressed through the lens of suffering and self-denial. His mystical theology combined scholastic reasoning with heartfelt devotion, and his poetic prose captured the attention of both laypeople and clergy alike.
Despite facing suspicion and opposition for his mystical ideas, Suso remained faithful to the Church and was ultimately cleared of heresy. His works were influential for centuries and played a key role in shaping later spiritual writers.
Blessed Henry Suso, mystic of divine love, guide us to seek deeper union with Christ through humility, suffering, and joy in God's presence. Amen.
BLESSED. HENRY SUZO
