Bl. Mary Assunta Pallotta was an Italian Franciscan missionary sister who served in China. Known for her charity, purity, and missionary zeal, she died young after contracting typhus while caring for the sick.

Born in Force, in the Italian region of Marche, Mary Assunta Pallotta was the eldest of eleven children. From a young age, she demonstrated a deep devotion to the faith, spending time in prayer and assisting with household duties to help her struggling family.

In 1898, she entered the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary in Grottaferrata. She was noted for her silence, humility, and obedience, embracing a life of service and interior holiness. Mary Assunta longed to be a missionary and was eventually sent to China in 1904, joining a mission in the Shanxi province where Catholic sisters served the poor and educated children.

Her time in China was brief but impactful. She learned the local language quickly and immersed herself in missionary work, especially nursing and education. Despite harsh conditions and the aftermath of the Boxer Rebellion, she maintained a spirit of joy and self-sacrifice. In 1905, while caring for victims of typhus, she contracted the disease and died within days at just 26 years old.

Her life was marked by total self-giving, especially in her final acts of charity. Miracles were reported at her grave, and her reputation for holiness spread quickly. Pope Pius XII beatified her in 1954, recognizing her as a model of missionary love and sacrifice.
