BLESSED. YOLANDA OF HUNGARY

BLESSED. YOLANDA OF HUNGARY

Blessed Yolanda of Hungary was a Hungarian princess and Franciscan tertiary who devoted her life to charity, humility, and religious service in Poland after the death of her husband.

Blessed Yolanda of Hungary was born around 1235 into the royal family of Hungary. She was the daughter of King Béla IV of Hungary and the sister of two other holy women: St. Margaret of Hungary and Blessed Kinga of Poland. Raised in an environment of deep Catholic faith and royal responsibility, Yolanda was educated in both spiritual and noble virtues.

At a young age, Yolanda was betrothed and later married Boleslaus the Pious, Duke of Greater Poland. The marriage was both a political alliance and a spiritual union. Together, the couple lived a life of piety and generosity, especially devoted to the care of the poor and the founding of churches, hospitals, and monasteries. They had several children, and Yolanda was deeply involved in their spiritual upbringing. She and her husband actively supported the Franciscan and Poor Clare movements in Poland.

After Boleslaus’ death in 1279, Yolanda chose not to remarry but to dedicate her life entirely to Christ. Along with her sister, Blessed Kinga, she entered the Poor Clare monastery at Sandez (now Stary Sącz) in Poland. Later, she moved to a newly founded Poor Clare monastery in Gniezno, where she became abbess. Despite her royal background, she lived with remarkable humility, embracing poverty and simplicity with joy.

Yolanda was known for her cheerful demeanor, deep prayer life, and loving care for the sisters in her convent. She died on June 11, 1298, revered for her holiness and sanctity. Her cult was officially confirmed in 1827 by Pope Leo XII, and she is honored as Blessed within the Church.

Her life, marked by a seamless blend of nobility and religious devotion, continues to inspire those called to serve God through charity and humility.
