ST. ALEXANDER I

ST. ALEXANDER I

St. Alexander I was the sixth pope of the Catholic Church and served during a time of great persecution. He is remembered for his leadership, pastoral care, and strengthening the faith in the early Church.

St. Alexander I was born around 75 AD and became Bishop of Rome (Pope) around 105 AD, following Pope Evaristus. His papacy occurred during the reign of Roman Emperor Trajan, a period marked by subtle but persistent persecution of Christians. While historical details about his life are scarce, tradition holds that he made notable contributions to the liturgy and the administration of sacraments.

He is sometimes credited with introducing the use of holy water mixed with salt for the purification of Christian homes and the addition of certain phrases to the liturgical canon of the Mass, though modern scholarship debates the accuracy of these claims. Despite these uncertainties, his papacy was essential in solidifying the practices and unity of the young Church.

According to legend, St. Alexander I was arrested for his Christian faith and ultimately martyred by decapitation, either in Rome or a nearby location. His martyrdom reinforced the courage of early Christians under imperial threat. He is believed to have died alongside the priests Eventius and Theodolus, who are commemorated with him.

His remains were said to have been interred along the Nomentan Way in Rome, and he is honored as a saint and martyr in both the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Churches.
