St. Alodia and Nunilo

St. Alodia and St. Nunilo were young Christian martyrs in Muslim-ruled Spain, who chose death over renouncing their faith, becoming symbols of youthful courage and holiness.

St. Alodia and St. Nunilo were sisters born in 9th-century Huesca, in the Kingdom of Aragon, at a time when much of Spain was under Muslim rule. Their father was a Muslim, but their Christian mother raised them in the Christian faith. After their father’s death, they lived openly as Christians, which was forbidden under Islamic law, particularly for those born into Muslim households.

Their adherence to Christianity soon drew the attention of the authorities. Arrested during a period of intensified persecution, the sisters were brought before the local qadi (judge) and ordered to renounce their faith and embrace Islam. Despite threats, promises, and tortures, Alodia and Nunilo remained resolute, publicly professing their loyalty to Christ.

Their refusal enraged the judge, and both were sentenced to death. The sisters faced their execution with remarkable serenity and courage, firmly embracing martyrdom as a testimony to their faith. It is said that their example encouraged many Christians living in fear to hold steadfast to their beliefs.

The veneration of Alodia and Nunilo began soon after their deaths. Their relics were later transferred to the monastery of Leyre in Navarre, which became a site of pilgrimage. Their story remained particularly inspiring during the later Christian reconquest of Spain, symbolizing the enduring spirit of the Christian faith under oppression. Today, Sts. Alodia and Nunilo are remembered as shining examples of youthful bravery, purity, and unwavering devotion to God.
