ST. ANNA WANG

ST. ANNA WANG

St. Anna Wang was a young Chinese martyr who gave her life during the Boxer Rebellion. She chose death over renouncing her Christian faith and is honored as a courageous example of youthful holiness.

St. Anna Wang was born in 1886 in China, during a time of rising anti-Christian sentiment. Baptized and raised in the Catholic faith, Anna was a devout child from a young age, often found praying and showing a strong love for Jesus and the Blessed Virgin Mary.

In 1900, when she was just 14 years old, the Boxer Rebellion swept through northern China. This violent anti-foreign and anti-Christian uprising targeted missionaries and local converts alike. Christians were forced to renounce their faith or face execution.

Anna, along with other Christians in her village, was arrested and ordered to deny her faith in Christ. Despite her youth, she stood firm. When commanded to abandon her religion, she responded with unwavering courage, saying, "I am a Christian and I shall die a Christian."

She was brutally executed — her arm was severed before she was beheaded. Anna offered her life with peace and love, entrusting herself to God until her final breath.

St. Anna Wang was canonized on October 1, 2000, by Pope John Paul II, along with 119 other Chinese martyrs. Her witness continues to inspire young people around the world to stand firm in their faith, even in the face of persecution.
