ST. BADEMUS
St. Bademus was a wealthy Persian nobleman who became a devout Christian monk and abbot. He was imprisoned and eventually martyred for his faith under King Shapur II's persecution of Christians in Persia.
St. Bademus was born around the 4th century in Persia (modern-day Iran) into a noble and wealthy family. Despite his privileged background, Bademus chose a life of simplicity and devotion to God. He gave away much of his wealth and founded a monastery near Bethlapeta, where he lived in strict asceticism alongside a group of monks who admired his holiness and leadership.
During the reign of Shapur II, Christians in Persia faced brutal persecution. Bademus was arrested along with several of his disciples for refusing to renounce Christ. Despite suffering severe torture and harsh imprisonment, he remained steadfast in his faith and continued to encourage his fellow prisoners.
One of the most dramatic moments in his martyrdom occurred when a fellow Christian nobleman named Nersan, who had apostatized under pressure, was ordered by the king to execute Bademus. Overwhelmed with guilt and inner torment, Nersan hesitated and struck Bademus with trembling hands, prolonging the agony until Bademus finally succumbed. This act not only revealed Bademus’ strength of soul but also the tragic downfall of Nersan.
St. Bademus' unwavering witness to the faith under extreme persecution made a deep impression on early Christians. He was venerated as a martyr shortly after his death, and his story was preserved as a testimony to the power of faith and perseverance.
St. Bademus, fearless martyr of Christ, help us to remain strong in our faith amidst trials. May your example inspire courage and holiness in our hearts. Amen.
