O holy martyrs Basillissa and Julian, You lived in purity and died in faith, Strengthen us to serve Christ in love, And remain steadfast through every trial. Amen.
ST. BASILLISSA AND JULIAN
Saints Basillissa and Julian were early Christian martyrs and spouses who lived in virginity, served the poor, and died during violent persecution. They are honored for their faith, purity, and courage.
Saints Basillissa and Julian were a Christian couple from Antioch who lived during the time of the Roman Emperor Diocletian, around the end of the third century. Though married, they made a mutual vow of chastity, choosing to live in spiritual purity and dedicate their lives fully to the service of Christ and the Church.
They opened their home as a refuge for the sick, the poor, and persecuted Christians. Their charity extended beyond material aid, as they strengthened many in the faith through prayer and encouragement. Julian also served as a leader in the Christian community, offering spiritual guidance during a time of widespread fear and oppression.
When the persecution of Christians intensified, both Basillissa and Julian were arrested. Their open profession of faith and the influence they had over others made them targets for the Roman authorities. They were tortured and pressured to renounce Christ, but they remained firm. Basillissa was the first to be martyred, enduring terrible sufferings. Shortly after, Julian was also killed for refusing to worship pagan gods.
According to tradition, many others—over 5,000—were converted or inspired by their example and also suffered martyrdom. Their story spread widely among the early Christian communities as a witness of both spiritual purity and fearless devotion.
Their feast day is celebrated on January 9, and they are especially remembered as models of holy marriage, virginity, and heroic faith.
O holy martyrs Basillissa and Julian, You lived in purity and died in faith, Strengthen us to serve Christ in love, And remain steadfast through every trial. Amen.
