Saint Bertha of Kent was a Frankish princess and Queen of Kent who helped bring Christianity to Anglo-Saxon England. After her husband's death, she lived a life of devotion and is honored as a saint.

Saint Bertha was born around the year 565 into the royal family of the Franks. She was the daughter of Charibert I, King of Paris, and was raised in the Christian faith at a time when much of Europe was still transitioning from paganism. As a young woman, she was given in marriage to King Æthelberht of Kent, an Anglo-Saxon ruler of southern England.

A condition of the marriage was that Bertha would be allowed to practice her Christian faith freely. She brought with her a chaplain named Liudhard, and together they restored an old Roman church in Canterbury, dedicated to Saint Martin. Bertha’s example, quiet faith, and influence at court prepared the way for the arrival of Christian missionaries from Rome.

In 597, Pope Gregory the Great sent Saint Augustine and his companions to England to evangelize the Anglo-Saxons. Thanks to Bertha’s presence and her spiritual groundwork, the mission was warmly received. Æthelberht himself converted to Christianity, becoming the first Christian king in England. His conversion led to the baptism of thousands, and the establishment of the English Church began to take root.

After her husband's death, Bertha lived in prayer and simplicity, likely taking on a role similar to that of an abbess. She continued to support the Church and the monastic community in Canterbury. Her influence helped shape Christian England in its earliest formation.

Saint Bertha died around the year 612 and is venerated as a key figure in the Christianization of England. Her feast is celebrated on July 4, and she is remembered as a queen, widow, and spiritual mother to the English people.
