ST. BONA OF PISA
St. Bona of Pisa was a mystic, Third Order Augustinian, and pilgrim guide, known for her deep devotion, charitable works, and many pilgrimages. She is the patron saint of travelers and flight attendants.
St. Bona of Pisa was born around 1156 in Pisa, Italy. From an early age, she experienced mystical visions and had a profound spiritual life. At age 10, she had her first vision of Jesus Christ, which led her to dedicate herself wholly to God. Drawn to the religious life, she became a tertiary (lay associate) of the Order of St. Augustine, while living with her family and remaining active in the world.
Bona had a deep devotion to the Holy Land and to pilgrimage. Despite the dangers of the time, she made several pilgrimages across Europe and the Mediterranean. At the age of 14, she journeyed alone to visit her Crusader father in Jerusalem. Later, she made repeated pilgrimages to Santiago de Compostela in Spain—reports suggest she completed this pilgrimage nine times, even serving as a guide for other pilgrims.
Her work as a pilgrimage guide required extraordinary courage and perseverance. She faced illness, bandits, and political unrest, yet always returned with unwavering faith. Her reputation for piety, leadership, and mystical experiences spread throughout Pisa and beyond. She was known for acts of charity, humility, and her dedication to the sick and poor.
St. Bona died around 1207, likely from illness contracted during her pilgrimages. She was beloved in Pisa, where her memory remained strong. In 1962, she was declared the patron saint of flight attendants by Pope John XXIII, in recognition of her role as a spiritual travel guide.
St. Bona, faithful guide and tireless servant of God, lead us on our journey of faith. Keep travelers safe and help us walk in humility and trust. Amen.
