St. Charles of Sezze was a humble Franciscan friar known for his devotion to prayer and penance, whose simple life became an inspiration to many.
St. Charles of Sezze, born Carlo Diano, was a humble and pious man who became one of the most beloved Franciscan friars of his time. Born on October 19, 1613, in Sezze, a small town in Lazio, Italy, he was the son of poor, devout parents. Charles grew up working on the family farm but was drawn to a life of religious service from a young age.
At the age of 21, he entered the Franciscan Order, where he took the name Charles in honor of St. Charles Borromeo, the Archbishop of Milan. As a novice, he was known for his great humility and deep love for the Lord. He had no desire for attention, preferring to live a life of obscurity and prayer. Throughout his life, he was tasked with menial jobs within the friary—such as sweeping the floors and running errands—yet he performed these duties with a joyful and generous heart, showing deep devotion in all that he did.
St. Charles was known for his profound spiritual life. He spent long hours in prayer, often seeking the quiet solitude of the chapel, where he would experience mystical visions of Jesus Christ and the Virgin Mary. His devotion to the Eucharist was especially strong, and he was frequently seen at Mass and during the nightly vigils. It was said that he could enter into such a deep state of prayer that he was oblivious to everything around him, including food and rest.
Despite his mystical experiences, Charles remained a man of great humility, never drawing attention to his spiritual gifts. He never sought any position of importance within the Order, content to remain in his lowly station. His simplicity, however, endeared him to everyone around him, and his personal holiness shone brightly. He also had a great love for the poor, and he would often give away what little he had to help those in need.
Charles died on January 6, 1670, at the age of 56. His funeral was attended by many people, as his reputation for holiness had spread throughout the region. He was beatified by Pope Pius XI in 1938 and canonized by Pope Pius XII in 1951. St. Charles of Sezze’s legacy continues to inspire many, especially those who desire to live a life of humility and service to God.
