Saint Chelidonia was born in 1077 in Ciculum, Abruzzi, Italy. From a young age, she exhibited a profound devotion to God. At the age of 20, she left her familial home to pursue a life of solitude and prayer. She chose a cave near Subiaco, Italy, as her dwelling, where she lived for 52 years in extreme austerity, dedicating herself entirely to contemplation and penance.

During her solitary life, Chelidonia received her Benedictine habit from Cardinal Cuno of Frascati. She was known for her deep spirituality, humility, and commitment to a life of prayer. Her reputation for holiness attracted many visitors who sought her counsel and blessingsChelidonia's life was characterized by her unwavering faith and dedication to God. She lived a life of extreme austerity, surviving on minimal sustenance and rarely communicating with the outside world.
