Saint Chelidonia, born in 1077 in Ciculum, Abruzzi, Italy, was a Benedictine hermitess who dedicated her life to prayer and solitude. At the age of 20, she left her home to live in a cave near Subiaco, where she spent 52 years in austere contemplation. Her deep spirituality and dedication led to her veneration as a saint. She is the patron saint of Subiaco, and her feast day is celebrated on October 13.

At the age of 20, she left her familial home to pursue a life of solitude and prayer. She chose a cave near Subiaco, Italy, as her dwelling, where she lived for 52 years in extreme austerity, dedicating herself entirely to contemplation and penance.

During her solitary life, Chelidonia received her Benedictine habit from Cardinal Cuno of Frascati. She was known for her deep spirituality, humility, and commitment to a life of prayer. Her reputation for holiness attracted many visitors who sought her counsel and blessingsChelidonia's life was characterized by her unwavering faith and dedication to God. She lived a life of extreme austerity, surviving on minimal sustenance and rarely communicating with the outside world. Despite her solitude, she became a beacon of faith and devotion, inspiring many who came to know her story.She passed away on October 13, 1152, in Subiaco. Her remains were later interred in the Church of Saint Scholastica in Subiaco, Italy. Over time, she became recognized as the patron saint of Subiaco.
