She also rejected a marriage proposal from a Roman official who sought her hand, choosing instead to maintain her vow of chastity and loyalty to her faith.

Her refusal led to her arrest and torture. Despite being subjected to brutal treatment, Dorothy remained resolute in her beliefs. It was during her execution that the most enduring element of her legend unfolded. A Roman lawyer named Theophilus, mocking her faith as she was led to death, sarcastically asked her to send him fruits and flowers from the heavenly garden of her so-called Bridegroom—referring to Christ. As she approached her execution, Dorothy prayed, and suddenly, a child angel appeared before her carrying a basket of three roses and three apples—an impossible occurrence in the dead of winter.

The child brought the basket to Theophilus, who was so astounded by this miracle that he immediately converted to Christianity. He publicly declared his faith and, as a result, was also martyred. This miraculous tale solidified Dorothy’s status as a saint and contributed to the growth of her cult during the Middle Ages.

In art, St. Dorothy is frequently depicted with a basket of roses and apples, often accompanied by the angelic child who delivered the miraculous gift. Her story captured the imagination of Christian communities, particularly during the time when martyrdom was seen as the ultimate testimony of faith.

Over the centuries, she became widely venerated in Europe, especially in Germany and Italy. Churches and altars were dedicated to her, and she was often called upon in prayers by gardeners, brides, and newlyweds. Her association with flowers and fruit has made her a symbol of divine beauty and heavenly reward.

Though her story is largely legendary, St. Dorothy’s example continues to inspire devotion. She represents courage, spiritual integrity, and the divine affirmation of faith through miracles.
