St. Elizabeth of Hungary, also known as St. Elizabeth of Thuringia, was born in 1207 in Hungary, into the royal family. She married King Louis IV of Thuringia in 1221 and became queen consort. Despite her royal status, Elizabeth was renowned for her deep compassion and dedication to the poor. She used her wealth and royal position to provide for the less fortunate, personally caring for the sick and poor. Elizabeth founded a hospital in Marburg where she personally tended to the ill, embodying a life of humility and charity. One of the most well-known stories of her life involves her carrying bread to the poor, and when questioned by her husband, the bread miraculously transformed into roses.

After the death of her husband in 1227, Elizabeth's life became more challenging. Her in-laws took control of the royal estate, leaving Elizabeth and her children without support. She was cast out of the royal court, but she continued her work among the poor and sick. Her faith and devotion never wavered, and she became a member of the Third Order of St. Francis, taking a vow of poverty. Despite facing hardships, she remained steadfast in her mission to help others, relying solely on her deep faith.

Elizabeth’s life was tragically short, as she died in 1231 at the age of 24. However, her legacy of charity, humility, and service to the needy left a profound impact on those around her. She was canonized just four years after her death by Pope Gregory IX in 1235, a testament to her holiness and the example she set for others. Her feast day is celebrated on November 17, and she is the patroness of hospitals, nursing, and the poor. St. Elizabeth of Hungary is remembered for her unwavering dedication to the service of others, and her life continues to inspire countless individuals to serve those in need.
