ST. ELIZABETH OF THE TRINITY

ST. ELIZABETH OF THE TRINITY

St. Elizabeth of the Trinity (1880–1906) was a French Discalced Carmelite nun known for her profound spirituality and writings on the indwelling of the Holy Trinity. Entering the Carmel of Dijon at 21, she embraced a life of prayer and contemplation. Despite her short life, she left a lasting legacy through her letters and spiritual insights. She was canonized by Pope Francis in 2016.

Élisabeth Catez was born on July 18, 1880, in the military camp of Avord, near Bourges, France, to Captain Joseph Catez and Marie Rolland. She was baptized on July 22, 1880, at the camp's chapel. Her father died unexpectedly on October 2, 1887, when Élisabeth was just seven years old. Following his death, the family moved to Dijon, where Élisabeth continued her education and developed a deep spiritual life. From a young age, Élisabeth exhibited a strong temper, but after receiving her First Communion in 1891, she gained greater self-control and a deeper understanding of God. She became actively involved in her parish, visiting the sick, singing in the church choir, and teaching religion to children working in factories. Her devotion to the Holy Trinity grew, and she often referred to the Trinity as "my Three," emphasizing her intimate relationship with the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. At 21, Élisabeth entered the Discalced Carmelite monastery in Dijon on August 2, 1901, against her mother's wishes. She took the name Sister Marie-Élisabeth of the Trinity. During her time in the convent, she experienced both spiritual highs and periods of darkness, which led her spiritual director to question her vocation. Nonetheless, she persevered and made her final profession on January 11, 1903.Despite her short time in the convent, Élisabeth became a spiritual director for many and left behind a legacy of letters and retreat guides. Her most famous written work is her prayer, "O my God, Trinity whom I adore," which reflects her deep devotion to the Holy TrinityIn 1905, Élisabeth's health began to decline due to Addison's disease, which was incurable at the time. She accepted her suffering with grace, viewing it as a means to unite herself more closely with God. Her last words were: "I am going to Light, to Love, to Life!"The process for her beatification began in 1931 and concluded with her beatification by Pope John Paul II on November 25, 1984, in Paris. She was canonized by Pope Francis on October 16, 2016, in Saint Peter's Square. Her feast day is celebrated annually on November 8, the anniversary of her death. St. Elizabeth of the Trinity is the patron saint of sick people, those who have lost parents, and those suffering from illness.
