ST. EUPHRASIA PELLETIER
St. Euphrasia Pelletier was a French nun and foundress of the Congregation of Our Lady of Charity of the Good Shepherd, devoted to the care of marginalized women and girls. Her legacy of compassion and reform lives on globally.
St. Euphrasia Pelletier, also known as Mary Euphrasia, was born in Noirmoutier-en-l'Île, France, in 1796 during the turbulent aftermath of the French Revolution. Orphaned at a young age, she was raised in a devout Catholic environment, which deeply nurtured her vocation. Drawn to religious life, she joined the Sisters of Our Lady of Charity in Tours at age 18.
Recognizing the urgent need to support women and girls who were marginalized, abandoned, or at risk, she founded the Congregation of Our Lady of Charity of the Good Shepherd in 1835 in Angers, France. Her mission focused on the rehabilitation of women through love, education, and work, emphasizing dignity and individual worth.
Euphrasia was known for her wisdom, compassion, and organizational skill. She established homes around the world for women and children in crisis. Under her leadership, the Good Shepherd Sisters expanded rapidly, with communities emerging across Europe and eventually worldwide.
Despite facing opposition, internal challenges, and health struggles, she remained resilient and faithful. She died in Angers in 1868, leaving behind a powerful legacy of mercy, outreach, and reform.
Today, the Good Shepherd Sisters continue her mission in over 70 countries, helping vulnerable individuals through social services, education, and spiritual guidance.
