St. Felix of Nola, confessor of the faith and humble servant of Christ, pray for us to remain steadfast in trials and joyful in sacrifice. Amen.
ST. FELIX OF NOLA
St. Felix of Nola was a priest known for his deep humility, piety, and miraculous protection during Roman persecutions. Revered as a confessor of the faith, his devotion and endurance made him a beloved figure in the early Church.
St. Felix of Nola was born around 210 AD near Naples in Nola, Italy. His father, a Syrian soldier who had retired and become wealthy, ensured Felix received a good education. After the death of his father, Felix gave away much of his inheritance to the poor and chose the religious life, eventually becoming a priest under Bishop Maximus of Nola.
During the Decian persecution around 250 AD, Bishop Maximus fled into hiding, and Felix was arrested and brutally tortured for his faith. He managed to escape—according to legend, with the help of an angel—and found Bishop Maximus, who was sick and in hiding. Felix carried him to safety and tended to him in secret.
Although he survived the persecutions, Felix never aspired to become bishop, choosing instead a humble life of service and prayer. He became known for his kindness, miracles, and acts of charity. Even after his release, he refused to reclaim his family wealth and lived modestly on the charity of others.
His tomb in Nola became a popular pilgrimage site, and he was highly venerated by St. Paulinus of Nola, who wrote several poems in his honor. Though not martyred, Felix is considered a confessor, someone who suffered for the faith but was not killed.
St. Felix of Nola, confessor of the faith and humble servant of Christ, pray for us to remain steadfast in trials and joyful in sacrifice. Amen.
